Concern

Rosacea

A chronic condition that can be managed — not just masked

Rosacea affects over 415 million people worldwide. While there is no cure, vascular laser treatment can significantly reduce persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and the frequency of flare-ups — addressing the underlying vascular component that topical treatments alone cannot reach.

Understanding the Concern

What Is Rosacea & What Causes It

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition primarily affecting the central face — cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. It is characterised by persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes inflammatory papules and pustules. The condition tends to worsen over time if untreated.

There are four recognised subtypes. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR) presents as persistent redness and visible blood vessels. Papulopustular rosacea includes acne-like breakouts alongside redness. Phymatous rosacea causes skin thickening, most commonly on the nose (rhinophyma). Ocular rosacea affects the eyes, causing dryness, burning, and swollen eyelids.

The exact cause remains unclear, but rosacea involves a combination of genetic predisposition, immune system dysregulation, and vascular instability. Common triggers include sun exposure, heat, alcohol, spicy food, stress, and certain skincare products. The dilated blood vessels that produce visible redness become permanent over time — this is the component that responds best to laser treatment.

Why Treatment Matters

Rosacea Is Progressive Without Management

Left unmanaged, rosacea typically progresses. Intermittent flushing becomes persistent redness. Visible blood vessels multiply. Skin may thicken. The psychological impact — anxiety, self-consciousness, avoidance of social situations — is well-documented and significant.

Effective management combines trigger avoidance, gentle skincare, topical or oral medications for inflammatory symptoms, and laser treatment for the vascular component. Laser addresses what medications cannot — the permanently dilated blood vessels that produce chronic redness.

Treatment Comparison

Rosacea Treatments Compared

Vascular Laser (Nd:YAG)

1064nm Nd:YAG laserDermal blood vessels

Our 1064nm Nd:YAG vascular laser selectively targets haemoglobin in the dilated blood vessels responsible for rosacea redness. The laser energy heats and collapses these vessels, which are then reabsorbed by the body over the following weeks. The Nd:YAG wavelength is preferred for rosacea because it penetrates deeper than pulsed dye lasers, reaching the thicker dermal vessels that drive persistent redness. Unlike V-beam, it does not cause significant purpura (bruising), making it more socially convenient.

Topical Treatments

Metronidazole, azelaic acid, brimonidineSkin surface / epidermis

Oral Antibiotics

Anti-inflammatory (doxycycline)Systemic

Low-dose doxycycline (sub-antimicrobial dose) is used for its anti-inflammatory properties in papulopustular rosacea. It reduces inflammatory lesions but does not address vascular redness or telangiectasia. Typically prescribed in 6-12 week courses. Not a long-term solution as a standalone treatment.

V-Beam (Pulsed Dye Laser)

595nm pulsed dye laserSuperficial blood vessels

The 595nm pulsed dye laser (V-beam) is highly effective for superficial rosacea redness and telangiectasia. However, it causes purpura (bruising) in many patients that lasts 7-10 days, making it socially inconvenient. It is less effective than Nd:YAG for deeper dermal vessels.

常见问题

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that commonly affects the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. It may cause persistent redness, visible blood vessels, flushing, and sometimes acne-like papules or pustules. It cannot be cured, but the vascular and inflammatory symptoms can be managed.

99 Medispa offers Nd:YAG vascular laser to target the permanently dilated vessels responsible for persistent redness. Rosacea management can also include trigger avoidance, gentle skincare, and topical or oral medications prescribed for inflammatory symptoms. Laser addresses the vascular component that topical care cannot remove.

Nd:YAG vascular laser can cause mild redness for 24-48 hours. Your practitioner will provide aftercare and may advise avoiding direct sun exposure, hot showers, vigorous exercise, alcohol, spicy food, and harsh skincare for 48-72 hours after treatment.

Vascular laser may suit people with persistent facial redness or visible dilated blood vessels, including redness around the nose. A practitioner will assess your rosacea subtype and skin sensitivity, use conservative settings, and explain how laser fits into long-term management.

Book a complimentary consultation with 99 Medispa in Sydney CBD. A practitioner will assess your skin, identify your rosacea subtype, and discuss a personalised management plan combining vascular laser with skincare and trigger guidance.
