What is Thermage FLX?

Thermage FLX is a non-surgical skin tightening treatment that uses monopolar radiofrequency. A tip held against the skin heats the dermis, which starts collagen renewal. We use it for wrinkles and mild-to-moderate skin laxity on the face, neck and around the eyes, and one treatment is the standard plan.

What areas can Thermage FLX target?

Thermage FLX can target the eyes, face, neck and selected body areas. We can plan the neck with the face or on its own, and each area gets its own assessment and tip. At consultation we confirm which areas your plan includes.

Is eye Thermage the same as a face treatment?

No. Eye treatment uses the 0.25 cm² eye tip, made for wrinkles and laxity around the eyes, including the eyelids. Plastic eye shields protect your eyes during treatment. We assess the eye area separately and confirm suitability at consultation.

What does a Thermage 400-shot treatment mean?

It means 400 pulses of radiofrequency energy through one tip. The same goes for listings of 600 or 900 shots. The right count for you depends on the area, the tip size and the number of passes.

What are those grid marks used for when performing Thermage FLX?

The grid guides where each pulse goes. Your practitioner follows it to cover the planned area, then wipes it off at the end.

What is the difference between Thermage FLX and CPT?

Both use monopolar radiofrequency. FLX has a 4 cm² Total Tip where CPT had a 3 cm² tip, and it adds AccuREP automatic energy calibration. The differences are in the device design, and we don't claim they produce a better result.

How long until you see results from Thermage FLX?

Thermage FLX results show gradually over 2 to 6 months as collagen remodels. You won't see a finished result on the day, and Thermage won't give a surgical lift. How fast and how much you change depends on your skin at the start, so wait out that window before you assess the result with your practitioner.

Are Thermage results permanent, and how often is it repeated?

No. Skin keeps ageing, so the result fades. One treatment is the standard plan, the result typically holds for one to two years, and after that we look at your skin and goals to decide on maintenance.

What age is best for Thermage FLX treatment?

There is no best age. What matters is how lax the skin is and what you want to change. Thermage may suit mild-to-moderate laxity, and your practitioner assesses your skin and medical history before recommending it.

Can Thermage FLX tighten jowls and jawline?

Thermage FLX aims to address the skin laxity behind jowls and a softer jawline. It may suit mild-to-moderate laxity, but it cannot do what surgery does. Your practitioner will assess the area and tell you whether it fits the change you want.

Is Thermage FLX worth it for skin tightening?

It may be if you have mild-to-moderate laxity and want gradual change without surgery. If you want an immediate or surgical-level lift, it is likely to disappoint. At consultation we go through the likely change, the limits and the fee so you can decide.

Is Thermage FLX treatment painful?

Most clients feel mild-to-moderate discomfort during Thermage FLX, and tolerance varies. Cooling and vibration help with comfort. Tell your practitioner how it feels and they will adjust the settings.

Is there any downtime?

Thermage FLX usually has very little downtime. Most clients go back to normal activity afterwards. You may have mild redness or temporary sensitivity, and your practitioner will explain aftercare and what to do if something worries you.

How long does a Thermage FLX session take?

A Thermage FLX session takes about 45 minutes to two hours, depending on the area. Larger areas take longer. We confirm the appointment length once we have agreed the coverage.

How should I prepare for my Thermage treatment?

Tell your practitioner about your medical history and any previous treatments, and confirm the area you want treated. We need to know about implanted electrical devices, pregnancy, breastfeeding, active skin infection or autoimmune conditions before we go further. Your practitioner will give you any preparation steps that apply to your plan.

What is the difference between Thermage and Ultherapy?

They are different treatments. Thermage heats the dermis with monopolar radiofrequency. Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound at selected tissue depths. We plan Thermage around texture and laxity, and Ultherapy around lift, so the choice depends on your concern and the area.

Can I combine Thermage with Ultherapy or other treatments?

Sometimes. Both can sit in one treatment plan, but a combination is not needed for everyone. Your practitioner looks at the areas, your previous treatments and your goals before recommending one and how to space the appointments.

The mechanism

How Thermage FLX works

Thermage FLX sends monopolar radiofrequency energy through a tip held against the skin. The energy heats the dermis, the collagen-rich layer under the surface, and that heat starts collagen renewal. Cooling protects the surface while it happens.

The heated collagen keeps remodelling after you leave, so the change shows over months. Before we start, we mark a temporary grid on the skin to guide placement, and we wipe it off at the end. We adjust settings during the session to suit your skin and how it feels.

Nothing is cut and nothing is injected. Thermage adds no volume. It changes firmness and texture.

Thermage heats the dermis with radiofrequency. Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound aimed at selected depths, including the SMAS support layer. We plan Thermage around texture and laxity, and Ultherapy around lift. Our Thermage and Ultherapy comparison sets the two side by side.

Thermage FLX and the earlier CPT generation

FLX and CPT both use monopolar radiofrequency. FLX has a 4 cm² Total Tip where CPT had a 3 cm² tip, and it adds AccuREP, which calibrates energy delivery automatically as treatment moves across the area.

Both generations pair cooling with vibration. The differences are in the device design, and we don't claim they produce a better result.

Treatment planning

Tips, shots and coverage

The tip is the applicator that touches your skin. A shot is one pulse of radiofrequency energy through it. So a 400, 600 or 900 shot treatment means that many pulses from one tip.

No shot count fits every face. The area, the tip size and the number of passes decide where the shots go, and a higher count allows more coverage or more passes. Ask us which areas your quote covers and how the count is split between them.

Areas and the tip used for each

Face
The 4 cm² Total Tip covers the forehead, cheeks, jawline and under the chin. We map coverage to where your laxity shows.
Neck
We can plan the neck with the face or on its own. It gets its own assessment, and adding it changes the shot count and the fee.
Eyes
The 0.25 cm² eye tip treats wrinkles and laxity around the eyes, including the eyelids. Plastic eye shields protect your eyes when we treat inside the orbital rim.
Body
We assess body areas one by one and plan them separately with the larger 16 cm² body tip.

Results and recovery

What to expect, from the day to the year after

On the day
A session takes about 45 minutes to two hours. We mark a temporary grid, treat, then remove it. Most people go straight back to their day.
The first few days
You may have mild redness, swelling or sensitivity. Before you leave, we explain aftercare and who to call if something worries you.
Two to six months
Collagen remodels slowly. Wait until the end of this window before you judge the result.
One to two years
Results typically hold for one to two years. Skin keeps ageing, so that is when we look at maintenance.

How soon and how much you change depends on your skin at the start and how it responds. Thermage cannot do what surgery does.

Who Thermage FLX suits

Thermage FLX may suit mild-to-moderate skin laxity. At consultation, we assess whether it is appropriate for concerns such as:

Loose skin on the face, neck or around the eyes
Fine lines and wrinkles
Uneven skin texture
Reduced jawline definition

Thermage cannot do what surgery does. You must not have it if you have a pacemaker, an implanted defibrillator or any other implanted electrical device. Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have an active skin infection or an autoimmune condition, so we can check suitability. If Thermage is wrong for you, or unlikely to give you the change you want, we will tell you why and talk through other options.

Risks and side effects

Expect mild-to-moderate discomfort during treatment. Afterwards you may have redness, swelling, bruising or altered sensation. The manufacturer's safety information also lists less common effects, including blisters, burns, surface irregularities and pigment change, and rare reactivation of cold sores. Your practitioner goes through these with you before treatment.

Researchers have studied monopolar radiofrequency in clinical studies and reviewed its effect on collagen under the microscope. Thermage FLX also has a registered trial. Each paper below reports on the group it studied and cannot predict your result. The trial entry records that a study was registered. It does not show results. At consultation, your practitioner will tell you what is realistic for your skin.
