Ultherapy Comparison
Ultherapy vs
Ultherapy Prime
If you are comparing our Ultherapy treatment with a clinic advertising Ultherapy Prime, you are not comparing two different treatments. Prime is a newer version of the same Ultherapy system. Standard Ultherapy is also sometimes called original, classic or legacy Ultherapy. Here is what you are—and are not—paying for.

The Short Answer
01
Is Ultherapy Prime better than standard Ultherapy? Not in terms of the lifting result promised by Merz.
Merz says Ultherapy Prime is 20% faster while delivering the same lifting results as legacy Ultherapy. Prime is an updated platform, not a new or stronger ultrasound treatment. You can read that wording in Merz's Ultherapy patient information.
Both systems use microfocused ultrasound at 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm treatment depths. Both have real-time ultrasound imaging. Prime gives the practitioner a clearer, wider image and a faster console, which can make the appointment more efficient.
A well-planned standard Ultherapy treatment remains a valid choice. At 99 Medispa, we use authentic Ultherapy at our Sydney CBD clinic and offer a complimentary consultation before you decide whether to proceed.
Side by Side
Ultherapy and Ultherapy Prime compared
Most of the differences matter more to the person operating the machine than to the tissue being treated.
| Feature | Ultherapy | Ultherapy Prime |
|---|---|---|
| Core technology | Microfocused ultrasound | Microfocused ultrasound |
| Real-time imaging | Yes — DeepSEE visualisation | Yes — upgraded visualisation |
| Treatment depths | 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm | 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm |
| Screen and image | Established imaging display | Larger screen, field of view and clearer image |
| System speed | Legacy workflow | Reported as 20% faster by Merz |
| Interface and ergonomics | Original platform design | Updated interface, handpiece and workstation |
| Treatment objective | Targeted collagen remodelling and lifting | Targeted collagen remodelling and lifting |
| Lifting result | Established Ultherapy result | Merz: same lifting results as legacy Ultherapy |
Note: Prime's viewing depth of up to 8 mm describes how far tissue can be visualised. It does not mean energy is delivered at 8 mm. Treatment and imaging depth are different measures.
The Prime Upgrade
So, what did Merz change?
20%
A faster machine
Merz reports that Prime is 20% faster on average, based on a survey of providers. For patients, the practical benefit is a potentially shorter appointment.
2×
A wider ultrasound view
Prime shows twice as much tissue on screen, with less visual noise. It is easier for the practitioner to read, especially while moving across the face.
19″
A newer console
The screen is larger and tilts. The software responds faster, the sounds are quieter and the handpiece is more comfortable to hold. These are sensible updates to an older machine.
These are worthwhile improvements. They do not change the ultrasound treatment delivered under the skin.
What Shapes the Result
Why results can differ on the same machine
Faces are not flat or uniform. Skin thickness, fat and bone structure change from one area to the next. The practitioner has to decide where to treat, which depth to use and where to hold back.
- 01
Assessment
First, is Ultherapy suitable for the type of laxity you have?
- 02
Mapping
The face is marked so the treatment follows your anatomy, not a standard template.
- 03
Depth selection
Different parts of the face and neck may need different transducers.
- 04
Line placement
Line count matters, but so do spacing, direction, contact and overlap.
- 05
Technique
The practitioner still has to read the image and control the handpiece throughout treatment.
Before You Book
Would we choose a clinic just because it has Prime?
No. If two clinics had equally experienced practitioners, equally thoughtful treatment plans and the same price, the faster Prime system would be a nice extra. Real clinics are rarely identical, though. We would choose the better consultation and treatment plan over the newer console.
At 99 Medispa, we use authentic Ultherapy and take the time to assess and map each treatment. We will also tell you when Ultherapy is unlikely to give you the change you want.
