Long-lasting results with medical-grade Nd:YAG laser technology
Unwanted hair affects confidence and consumes time. Fotona's Nd:YAG laser targets the hair follicle at its root, providing long-lasting reduction across all skin types — including darker skin tones where IPL cannot safely operate.
How Hair Growth Works & Why Multiple Sessions Are Needed
Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (regression), and telogen (resting). Laser hair removal is only effective during the anagen phase, when the hair follicle contains melanin and is actively connected to its blood supply. At any given time, only 20-30% of hairs are in the anagen phase.
This is why multiple sessions are essential. Each treatment targets the hairs currently in their growth phase, progressively reducing the total number of active follicles. Most areas require 6-8 sessions spaced 4-8 weeks apart to capture the majority of hair follicles during their active cycle.
Skin type matters. The laser targets melanin in the hair follicle, which means it must distinguish between the melanin in hair and the melanin in surrounding skin. The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength used by Fotona is the safest option for darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV-VI) because it penetrates deeper and is less absorbed by epidermal melanin, reducing the risk of burns and pigmentation changes.
Beyond Convenience
The average person spends thousands of hours over their lifetime on temporary hair removal — shaving, waxing, and plucking. Beyond the time investment, these methods cause ingrown hairs, razor burn, folliculitis, and hyperpigmentation. Laser hair removal addresses the root cause, progressively reducing hair growth until most follicles are permanently disabled.
While "permanent hair removal" is the common term, the clinical standard is "permanent hair reduction." Most patients achieve 80-90% reduction after a full course, with any remaining hairs finer and lighter. Annual touch-up sessions maintain results long-term.
Hair Removal Methods Compared
Fotona Nd:YAG Laser
Fotona's 1064nm Nd:YAG laser delivers concentrated energy deep into the hair follicle, heating and destroying the follicular stem cells responsible for hair regeneration. The longer wavelength bypasses epidermal melanin, making it the safest laser option for all skin types including Fitzpatrick IV-VI. The laser's adjustable pulse duration and fluence allow our practitioners to calibrate treatment for different body areas, hair thickness, and skin tones. Treatment is comfortable with the integrated cooling system.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
IPL uses broad-spectrum light (500-1200nm) to target hair follicle melanin. While effective on lighter skin with dark hair, IPL is less precise than true laser — the broad wavelength spectrum means more energy is absorbed by epidermal melanin, increasing the risk of burns and pigmentation changes on darker skin tones. IPL devices also vary significantly in quality between clinics and at-home devices.
Electrolysis
Electrolysis destroys individual hair follicles using electrical current inserted via a fine probe. It is the only method recognised as truly permanent by the FDA. However, it treats one follicle at a time, making it extremely time-consuming for larger areas. It is most practical for small areas (upper lip, eyebrows) or for treating individual hairs that laser has not fully disabled.
Waxing
Waxing removes hair by pulling it from the follicle. Results last 2-4 weeks before regrowth. Repeated waxing does not permanently reduce hair growth. Common side effects include ingrown hairs, folliculitis, skin irritation, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — particularly in sensitive areas.
At-Home Devices
Consumer IPL and diode devices operate at significantly lower power levels than clinical devices. While they can provide temporary hair reduction with consistent use, they cannot match the efficacy or permanence of professional laser treatment. They are also not recommended for darker skin tones due to limited safety features.
