Stretch Marks
& Cellulite
Two distinct conditions — both treatable with the right approach
Stretch marks and cellulite are among the most common skin concerns, affecting up to 90% of women at some point. While neither is a medical issue, both respond to targeted energy-based treatments that stimulate collagen remodelling beneath the skin surface.
What Causes Stretch Marks & Cellulite
Stretch marks (striae) form when the skin stretches rapidly beyond its elastic capacity — during pregnancy, puberty growth spurts, rapid weight gain, or bodybuilding. The dermis literally tears, breaking collagen and elastin fibres. Fresh stretch marks appear red or purple (striae rubrae) and mature into white or silvery scars (striae albae). The older and lighter the mark, the more challenging it is to treat.
Cellulite is an entirely different condition. It occurs when subcutaneous fat pushes through weakened connective tissue (fibrous septae) beneath the skin, creating the characteristic dimpled or 'orange peel' texture. Cellulite affects up to 90% of women regardless of weight or fitness level — it is primarily structural and hormonal, not a sign of poor health.
Because these are different conditions with different causes, they respond to different treatment mechanisms. Stretch marks require collagen remodelling and skin resurfacing. Cellulite requires a combination of fat reduction, connective tissue strengthening, and skin tightening.
Setting Realistic Expectations
No treatment can completely erase stretch marks or eliminate cellulite permanently. However, modern energy-based treatments can significantly improve their appearance — reducing the depth and colour of stretch marks, and smoothing the texture of cellulite-affected skin.
Early intervention produces better results. Red or purple stretch marks respond more readily to treatment than mature white marks. Cellulite treatment works best as an ongoing maintenance programme rather than a one-time fix.
Treatments for Stretch Marks & Cellulite
ENDYMED
Endymed's fractional RF creates controlled micro-injuries in the dermis using radiofrequency energy, triggering a robust wound-healing response that produces new collagen and remodels scar tissue. For stretch marks, this means gradually replacing the disrupted collagen structure with healthier tissue. For cellulite, the deep heating tightens the skin and strengthens the connective tissue framework. Multiple sessions build cumulative improvement.
Fotona
Thermage FLX
Thermage delivers volumetric radiofrequency heating to the deep dermis, causing existing collagen to contract while stimulating new collagen production over the following months. For cellulite, the overall skin tightening effect smooths the dimpled appearance. For stretch marks, Thermage is most effective as part of a combination approach alongside a resurfacing technology like Endymed or Fotona.
Microneedling
Microneedling creates thousands of micro-punctures using fine needles to trigger collagen induction therapy. Effective for improving stretch mark texture and colour, particularly newer (red/purple) marks. Often combined with PRP for enhanced results. Requires multiple sessions over several months.
PRP Therapy
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is extracted from your own blood and injected or applied to the affected area. The concentrated growth factors accelerate tissue repair and collagen synthesis. Most effective when combined with microneedling or laser treatments to enhance their collagen-remodelling effects.
CO2 Fractional Laser
Fractional CO2 laser creates microscopic columns of ablated tissue to trigger aggressive collagen remodelling. It produces the most dramatic improvement for stretch marks of any resurfacing technology but requires significant downtime (5-10 days per session). Most effective for mature white/silver stretch marks that have not responded to less intensive treatments.
